The emergence of a jail-themed jungle gym at the Tompkins Houses in Bedford Stuyvesant has the community in an uproar. Black and Brown News, which ran this image earlier this week, did some homework and found that NYCHA was responsible for ordering it earlier this week. I don’t think they should put that there in a neighborhood where many Blacks and Latinos go to jail,” one resident of the public housing complex told BBN. “My son will ask me, Mommy, if I go in there, will I go to jail. As of yesterday, NYCHA had told BBN it was “looking into” the matter and there had been no response yet from the mayor’s office. Pretty mind-boggling and offensive, no?

  1. bxgrl – Do you really think a “high income earning white guy from the UES” made this decision? Do you know anyone who works for the city? Have you ever been witness to a city ageny’s decisionmaking process?

Again, a searing case of group dumbness, not malice.

  2. bkhabitant- Considering the reaction to the playground, I hardly think someone in the Black community would have purchased this. I suggest you address some of the really offensive comments here before you pick up on mine. Funny how that works.

  3. “”I wonder what Martha Stewart would think????””

Maybe she designed it. She had her stay in the slammer. But I think she would be offended by the plastic materials, tacky color scheme and the crass lack of taste and imagination. Not to mention actually putting the name of something on something. Does she put a big label Centerpiece on her centerpieces? On Martha Stuarts, Christmas village, do you think that she would STAND for little buildings that said POST OFFICE, CHURCH, TOWN HALL?

  4. One of the reasons the good Doctor takes the time from his immensely busy day to comment on this blog is to consider the social psychological implications of the rantings made by the madding crowd. Although hysterical masses are more inclined to conspiratorial delusions than rational fact, the good Doctor offers his well considered reassurance that the odds of this “jailed gymed jungle gym” having a lasting adverse impact on a child is about as remote as that child winning the lottery or dying in a plane crash. On the other hand, it will undoubtedly lead to great consternation, concern and worry by adult guardians of these “vulnerable” children. It is the adults and not the children who will suffer, but the cause of the adult suffering will never be acknowledged as they will transfer their concerns onto their or others’ children. A curious situation indeed, the good Doctor notes.

  5. Bxgirl, well said, up until your “My guess is some high income earning white guy from the UES thought this would be humorous” comment. Just as offensive as anything else having to do with this story.

  6. *Rob*, if you think I’m uber PC you are either incapable of forming memories or just don’t pay attention. I’m probably the least PC of the regulars. And I’ve got my panties way up in a bunch about this.
