The emergence of a jail-themed jungle gym at the Tompkins Houses in Bedford Stuyvesant has the community in an uproar. Black and Brown News, which ran this image earlier this week, did some homework and found that NYCHA was responsible for ordering it earlier this week. I don’t think they should put that there in a neighborhood where many Blacks and Latinos go to jail,” one resident of the public housing complex told BBN. “My son will ask me, Mommy, if I go in there, will I go to jail. As of yesterday, NYCHA had told BBN it was “looking into” the matter and there had been no response yet from the mayor’s office. Pretty mind-boggling and offensive, no?

” to me this sounds more like something I would expect to hear from a conservative Republican running for Congress than from the person I thought I knew who lives in Park Slope.”
Oh, I bet there are MANY people in Park Slope with the same attitude.
“oh, and I never went to jail”
No Legion, you became a Republican, which is worse.
🙂
Who loves ya, baby?
“This is anti-intellecutal.”
QOTD
fun thread 😉
For the record,
where I grew up we had a playground too,
and this was right here in new york city.
it had steel seat swings that were good for breaking your teeth, that is when they weren’t broken and twisted over the pole for months at a time.
it had rusted monkey bars from which you could hang and fall to the ground covered in years of broken glass,
it had nice wooden sea saws that would leave 3 inch toothpick sized splinters on your ass each time you played on them,
there were no such things as rubber mats back then.
let’s not forget the rusted and long misshapen fencing which acted like barbed wire any time you wanted to climb over it.
…in the end though, we survived, I still have the scars to prove it.
and we didn’t complain about the playgroud we were given,
in fact we were grateful to have a place to hang out and smoke with the bigger kids and learn some life lessons.
oh, and I never went to jail although we did play cops and robbers and some of the kids I knew did go to jail for various things. but that’s another story.
That’s this Republican’s view.
Income tax returns are confidential. So unless this person has access to income tax returns or the IRS has published this particular statistic, this person is totally full of shit. And for the IRS to publish a statistic that the richest 400 Americans are in blatant violation of the Internal Revenue Code would be quite a surprise.
The average American IQ is 98. This is below the average human IQ…this whole thread is a perfect example why. This is anti-intellecutal. The very people you begrudge are smarter than you…they want this removed. You guys are giving examples why Americans are stupid. Read more frownstoners…read more.
“im sorry but i do not think people should be rewarded with food, health care, and subsidized housing just because they (most often!) found it easier to lay down with a man (who chances are will not help financially) and get pregnant. people should be PENALIZED for having kids they cant afford, NOT rewarded. we have it ass backwards in this country.”
Rob, I know I am beating a dead horse, but to me this sounds more like something I would expect to hear from a conservative Republican running for Congress than from the person I thought I knew who lives in Park Slope. That’s not a value judgment and there are plenty of people who agree with the sentiment (see: Newt Gingrich and his Contract with America), but I just would never imagine hearing such sentiment from you.
lechacal, as usual, you said it more eloquently than I did.
“In 2007, the latest year data is available, the richest 400 Americans had an average annual income of about $350 million. And their tax rate was 16%.”
Assuming that this is true and not just pulled out of the air or some other orifice, I suspect that these people are not committing any tax fraud so who’s to blame??? They most likely are earning income from dividends and capital gains a la Warren buffett, bill Gates, et al.
