This report just came in from the 76th Precinct. We’ve dispatched a reporter and should have a post-collapse photo up within the hour. …At approximately 10 p.m. last night, August 10, there was a partial building collapse at 455 Smith Street. An exterior wall and scaffolding collapsed onto the sidewalk and street. The building was unoccupied, and fortunately no one was injured. Seven (7) parked vehicles were damaged by the falling debris. The Buildings Department is currently assessing the structure and investigating the collapse. Update: The photos are starting to roll in above. Update 2: A reader directed us to some photos he took back in April of the building showing it was already partially demo’d. And another reader points us to this post from now-deceased blogger Bob Guskind predicting that disaster was imminent at this site, which is part of the Public Place project. GMAP

That would suck to own the cars that are *just* beyond the collapse… but being told you can’t move your car. Basically waiting to see if it gets crushed. At least the other guys can move on with their lawsuit. 🙂
It is a partial collapse because only part of the structure came down, as opposed to a total or complete collapse. The structure has similar walls on the more traveled Smith St. You may want to cross the street but then you would be under the protectively wrapped elevated train. I hope that black stuff holds back the spalling concrete. It never ceases to amaze me how the search for the elusive parking spot gets thwarted.
Huntington Street.
That wall was the only thing left to demolish pretty much. I guess it went on its own.
That is actually the part that is on Nelson.
“Is this that giant warehouse looking building you can see from the F/G?”
YES
What is up with all the building collapses in CH/CG lately? Is it the rain? Crappy construction?
Is this that giant warehouse looking building you can see from the F/G? The one they’ve been tearing down for a few months now? The top pic looks like it.
Yeah, I was gonna say that looks like more than a partial collapse. Imagine the surprise of the 7 car owners who went out, keys in hand, ready to drive off somewhere. Yikes.
