If you’re a troll or a spammer, you better try to get your last licks in now, because by Monday, the guest commenting function will be a thing of the past on Brownstoner. If you haven’t signed up for a user account yet, please try to do so in the next couple of days. (If you don’t receive your verification email within a couple of minutes, just email us and we’ll verify you by hand.) If you already have a user account and voted for the elimination of guest commenting, please put your money where your mouth is and make an effort to get involved in discussions. Another to remember is that you are still anonymous when you comment with a username: Just pick a silly name like Cobble Hill Guy and stick with it; no other readers will be able to see your email address or know who you really are. Our hope and expectation is that the improved quality of the threadsalong with our ability to boot anyone who steps out of boundswill more than make up for any decline in the quantity of comments.
We know that there are a lot of long-time readers out there who’ve gradually been moving to the sidelines of the discussions as they’ve grown nastier and more inane, and hopefully they will take this as an opportunity to re-engage and take the sense of community back to its roots where we can have meaningful, useful discussions about real estate, architecture and the many issues that confront the borough and its neighborhoods as the inevitable wheels of change continue to turn.
There are going to be a number of new features coming to the site in the next few months, the use of which will also be enhanced by having a user account. The first of these, launching next week, involves a group effort at building a comprehensive restaurant guide for the borough. (Having a username is particularly useful because other readers can come to trust, or distrust, you opinions about restaurants.) Other features down the pipe include map-based mobile access of the Brownstoner archives, neighborhood emails and some new service-oriented improvements in the architect and contractor spaces.
I’ll register if you offer a kill command so I can avoid ever seeing a comment from biff or dave again. Just give me the choice.
yeah, Facebook is doing terribly, 1:35!
EVERY website I know of which has switched to registered only guests was “over” within the span of 6 months.
I GUARANTEE this is not going to be helpful for this website. You can see from the above thread how confusing and idiotic the conversations become when a few middle aged men with too much time on their hands create multiple registered screenames and start talking to themselves.
You all MUST realize that half of the above names above you have never seen before are Biff and Dave, correct??
Same goes for the brokers who are worried about detection…Just sign up for an account with a made up name and a random yahoo or gmail account and, presto, it’s no different than commenting as a guest in terms of outside detection.
Unintended consequence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unintended_consequence
Unintended consequences are outcomes that are not (or not limited to) what the actor intended in a particular situation. The unintended results may be foreseen or unforeseen, but they should be the logical or likely results of the action.
I hope Brownstoner makes everyone get a Log-In. All the banter will be between Dave and little bitch boy Biff. They can discuss the finer points of “Prostate Massaging”.
Please Brownstoner, just do it…
The What (LMMFAOROTMFF)
Someday this war is gonna end…
if employers tracked this stuff, dave would have been fired 10 times over.
but i guess those guys at micky d’s love his “style”
It’s flattering when guests are so enamored with us (dare we say obsessed) that they’ll actually want to use a login name that’s a take-off of our id’s.
Wonderful. Now we can have all “bold type” guests and a proportional increase in in the “Did you see Desperate Housewives last night?” discussions between certain unnamed registered posters.
hhh…
Having registered guests will be no guarantee of that this site will achieve a “sense of community back to its roots”. Some of the most lively postings are “grey text”.
How many truly malicious posts are being sent to the site daily?
Aside from the person who loads seemingly endless cut-n-pastes of those two paragraphs talking about the contractor, etc., is the Brownstoner intern/staff spending really *that* much time daily deleting posts?
Oh, well…
How is it, then, that someone figured out who Crown Heights Proud was? He never posted with his real name, but someone was able to figure it out.
