  1. I didn’t go last year….’A chirstmas Carol’ is gone…WHAT…that was the most elegant one.

    Yes, I said elegant.

I’m going this year, curious to see what they do, with the economy they way it is. Somehow, I doubt, mafia money is affected by this economic meltdown.

  2. I think the Dyker house in this thread is a block away from the Christmas action, which is centered on 83rd and 84th, between 11-12 Aves, I believe. Agree with Steve that 2007 was a bit tame by comparison to years past. DIBS, I take it from your reaction you haven’t seen this before. If you’ve never done it before, round up some kids and head over there this Christmas. It must be seen live.

  3. The past few years have actually been more subdued than previous ones. Two of the most outrageous displays are gone.

One (my favorite) was in front of a beautiful old Victorian on a triple wide lot and depicted scenes from “A Christmas Carol” using life size mannequins in lavish, Broadway-quality costumes. The other was “Christmas Around the World”, which was a knock-off of Disney’s “Small World” with ferris wheels, a train, and so forth.

One year, I think Christmas 2000, someone constructed a “Christmas dragon”. It was an animatronic dragon’s head and neck mounted on the roof of a garage. I think it used hydraulics. It had glowing red eyes and swooped down on pedestrians, growling and belching smoke. It scared the hell out of little kids, which is probably why it had such a short run.

As BRG said, the giant Santa has a hidden speaker, mic and video camera so the owner can talk to the gawkers.

  4. In the last photos, in the lower right, there’s a red draped ‘chair’ – that’s where Santa sits.

One year, we were walking around and we heard loud music. We walked over to where it was coming from and there was a mob scene in front of a house. We stood around and joined the festivites. The owner gave a speech, his wife also, he handed out tootbrushes (he was a dentist), there was a band, and then a countdown and he flicked a switch and the whole place lit up like Vegas. He then invited everybody to come inside the house to check out the decorations on the inside. We didn’t feel like waiting on the line that formed. I wish we had, that’s a once in a lifetime opp.

  5. Whatever people think of Dyker, it’s interesting that the property got a 400K haircut before it sold. Too bad bstoner didn’t list other asks, since I think what is interesting to follow is exactly the gap between ask and close. I suspect that gap will only grow in the coming months.
