Set between the delights of Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park, this one bedroom doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but it does offer a practical layout and a renovated kitchen and bath. Located in Kensington, it’s on the second floor of a co-op building at 414 Albemarle Road.

The restrained Colonial Revival-style building, with Flemish bond brickwork and a broken pediment-topped portico, was completed in 1940 and designed by Martyn N. Weinstein (aka Martyn N. Weston.) The building was originally dubbed Albemarle Gardens and an early brochure pitched the building as one “where each apartment is a private dwelling.” Presumably they were trying to assure new renters that their neighbors wouldn’t be annoying but also offered further enticements such as built-in clothes hampers, Colonial-style light fixtures, linoleum in the kitchens, arched openings and “more closets than rooms.”

While that last tag line might be overselling this unit a bit, it does have three closets set in a comfortable layout, with a central foyer and a living room at one end and bedroom at the other. There have been some renovations — there are no arched openings here — but the living room has wood floors, two windows with views out to the street and room for a dining table. It looks like the renovation included stripping the radiator covers down to the original metal, which gave the one in the bedroom an interestingly rustic patina.

The renovated galley kitchen offers a fair amount of black granite countertop space along with wood cabinets and some glass-fronted uppers. The windowed bath still sports an original tub and vintage floor tile but has updated white subway tile walls and a white vanity.

There is a laundry room in the building and pets are considered on a case-by-case basis. The unit last sold in 2104 for $259,000 and now it’s up for rent for $2,000 a month. Claire McFeely of Compass has the listing. Worth the monthly nut?
