1440 albemarle road ditmas park 102014

Amazeballs and awesomesauce, as the Yelpers say. We’re not sure how we missed this listing for the most prominent house in Prospect Park South, 1440 Albemarle Road, when it went up in July, but we’ve noticed now and the price just dropped 13 percent.

Some of the decor is a tad frou frou but it’s not permanent and doesn’t obscure the incredible bones of the house, including a huge bank of windows in a curved bay, a spiral stair with an oriel skylight, and fancy mantels and wood work galore. Delightfully, there are original kitchen built-ins and at least one original bathroom with a claw foot tub and leaded glass window.

Built in 1905, it was designed by architects Robert Bryson and Carroll Pratt in the Colonial Revival style (plus a grab bag of others). Do you think $2,450,000 (down from $2,800,000) is a good deal for this “massive Victorian steamboat of a house,” as our own Montrose Morris put it?

  1. And if I won the lottery and could buy it, I would make sure the floors creaked and there was lace everywhere. I would put out bowls made out of cut crystal with multi colored hard candies in them all the time. I’d also be sure I had a geriatric dachshund.

That would be perfect! Ooh- think I am reliving some odd childhood memories. But still- it sure does conjure a lot!

  2. I love this house. Reminds me of playing hide and seek and ghosts in the attic and all things fun about being a kid. It reminds me of scary overbearing grandma’s and pearls and chanel #5. Damn I’d love it just for the smell I’m sure (and I don’t mean that in a bad way!).

  3. Wow, what a project to redo that one. Will be beautiful if redone to period but will cost an arm and a leg. Lots of plaster ceiling cracking as well as years of painted woodwork to uncover. What do you suppose is under that 40’s era Williamsburgesque tar/gravel siding? Wood?
