This house at 681 East 24th Street just hit the market with a price tag of $849,000. In addition to its external attributes like a driveway, porch and front lawn, the freestanding Victorian has a lot of interior charm to recommend it. The kitchen’s not exactly our taste but the rest of the house appears to have lovely original woodwork, floors and windows. Located one block from Brooklyn College, the house is asking $849,000. Does that sound reasonable to you?

  1. This house has more bang for the buck than just about any of the over 350 houses I have sold as a full time real estate professional in the past 14 years. Thanks to all for your feedback. The house has been significantly decluttered since the photos were taken. The original details are abundant and pristine. Did I mention it has a grand formal staircase and a service staircase leading from the kitchen to the second floor bedrooms. It is literally a palace, all for the price of a 2 bedroom condo. Remember, contempt prior to investigation can cost you a magnificent house on a tranquil tree-lined street.

    Happy house hunting to all!

  2. Oh, also, I think this is a beautiful house. For me, what’s holding back that kitchen most of all is the floor. Those large tiles, especially in the light colors…man. I know some people love them — my only stint in retail was in tile and stone — but to me they usually make a space feel institutional. Even high end stone can have that affect.

  3. “Unfortunate this family couldn’t remove some of the clutter before taking photos. It’s going to cost them tens of thousands of dollars.”

bkrules2, do you mean in waiting time, or that they will have to actually have to drop the price that much because of the effect of the clutter? Well, those things overlap, obviously, but still, curious what you mean specifically. I certainly agree that, for most buyers, clutter is an impediment to seeing the virtues of a property. Just wondering if you know more specifically how it ends up affecting sale price.

    Oh, that was long winded….

  4. When I was a teaching assistant at Brooklyn College in the late ’60s I had office space in a house on this block (then used by the BC Political Science Department, now the college’s Newman Center). Experiencing that beautiful house, similar to this one, was a major factor in making me want to live in, and ultimately own, an old house.
