houseDid anyone make it to the open house at 362 Bainbridge. If the current owner’s not doing a hatchet job on the interior, this place could be interesting at $669,000. No interior pics on the Aguayo website and little detail but we like the facade. And how about the location? It looks like the neighboring houses are in decent shape on the outside, although they both have a bad case of the white vinyl windows! Did anyone see any other interesting open houses?

  1. Saying it is just about race is way too simplistic and easy–and not the case. As a life-long Brooklynite, I (2:57) find the relentless whiteness of the Heights and the Slope to be extremely unappealing and unnatural. Brooklyn has never been like that before. What I find most appealing about areas like Bed Stuy and Lefferts is the existence of a large black middle/upper middle class community. However, the lowerclass population of those areas is even more unappealing to me–and those aren’t people I want to live with. The fact that they’re black is not the point–it’s their class and culture. I apologize again if that is offensive. But that’s how I feel.

  2. well i think in some ways it is offensive (refering to 2:57 post) simply because everyone knows why some folks would not want to live near the projects, or other developing areas of bedstuy. it has everything to do with the people who occupy the neighborhood who just happen to look like me.

  3. Shall we discuss the projects in Ft. Greene? I dont think so. MY point is that both of these areas still have housing projects yet real estate has boomed in these areas.

I don’t think anyone was knocking BedStuy. I live in FG/CH and wish the projects weren’t here either.

  4. Good grief. I had no idea my 2:57 comments would do inflame anyone. I’m happy for you and hope that you’re happy in your home. The fact is that Bed Stuy is certainly not for everyone–just as Maplewood isn’t (myself included, on both counts). But I know plenty of people who are faced with the choice of purchasing in Bed Sty or Lefferts Manor or Crown Heights or moving to the burbs and who are choosing the burbs. That isn’t to say that those are “bad” areas–but they do have a level of urban grit not everyone is comfortable with.

The point I was really trying to get to–and obviously failed to–is the tremendous downside of the real estate boom which is forcing a great number of people to leave the city. When we hail rising prices, we need to think of the impact on the long-term future of Brooklyn and who is going to be living here.

  5. I am constantly amazed at the arrogance that is displayed on this site. ANON2:57 Just so you know, I recently purchased a home in BedStuy in the low 700’s. While I am in finance, I am not a stock broker nor do I have the desire to live in Maplewood. My purchase was based on the neighborhood, my desire to live in a historic part of Brooklyn and my tolerance level for debt. I could have purchased a home that cost more but why should I?

I am so happy that you people are staying in Fort Greene, Pk Slope and Clinton Hill. I am always shocked when anyone who lives in CH has the nerve to comment on housing projects….Need I remind you people of when Myrtle Ave was nicknamed “Murder Ave”? Shall we discuss the projects in Ft. Greene? I dont think so. MY point is that both of these areas still have housing projects yet real estate has boomed in these areas.

Personally, I would rather be in a “less desirable” neighborhood where I know (and like) my neighbors rather than live among some yuppie do gooders who feel like they are doing me a favor by living in my neighborhood. Please continue to spread your mesage of evil and loathing regarding BedStuy and hopefully it will maintain the peace, tolerance and charm that I experience daily.

  6. While I hate to sound like I am endorsing 2:46’s comment, I do think that 700,000 for a so-so house in this location is an example of what is wrong with the market. The fact that some areas are hot doesn’t mean that all areas should be. This is what leads to the middle-class flight discussed in the posts on the population statistics. If you can only afford to spen 700,000 do you want a house next to the projects or a nice house in Maplewood? Soon there will be no one left in Brooklyn but stockbrokers.
