mccain-sign-1008.jpgHey, don’t assume that Park Slope will go blue on November 4th. Four brownstones on 11th Street are adorned with McCain signs (though residents had to travel to New Jersey to get them). Writes the NY Times, “The election district that includes 11th Street has 643 registered voters: 51 of them Republicans, 452 Democrats, 23 in other parties and 117 who did not list a party. That breakdown is echoed by the overwhelmingly Democratic makeup of Assembly District 52, as well as that of Brooklyn, which voted 79 percent for Senator John Kerry in 2004.” The McCain supporters are old school Slopers, writes the Times: residents from long before the Manhattan exodus who say the block was full of Roman Catholics and firemen when they arrived. But donkeys and elephants alike seem to be getting along: old and new, Obama and McCain-lovers. As one Democratic neighbor said about his neighbor’s signs, “To me, that says the person’s possibly open to some dialogue.

  1. Biff, I will respectfully disagree with that somewhat rosy analysis of the 2000 and 2004 election. 50% of people voting for Bush is 40 percentage points too high. Optimistic about this country’s future I’m not. So I guess I’m with PS on this one.

  2. So here goes….

    Ponder the following:

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the
stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed,
    pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard
    Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his
    graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a
    divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife
after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer
    measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a
long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became
addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally
    through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The
Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of
corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as
part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn’t read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that
included discipline problems and a record of crashing five
    planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display
publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management
    problem?

What if Michelle Obama’s family had made their money
    from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child? You could
easily add to this list. If these questions reflected
reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

    Educational Background:

    Specialization in International Relations.

    Political Science.
Syracuse University College of Law – Juris Doctor (J.D.)

    vs.

    John McCain:
United States Naval Academy – Class rank: 894 of 899

    Sarah Palin:

University of Idaho – 2 semesters – journalism

  3. dave-

“PS…glad to see that someone can see out 20 years or so. We might want to employ you here at the firm for your crystal ball look into the next 12-18 months!!!”

Joke as you will but isn’t the consensus here lately that a surprisingly large amount of Brownstoner readers are now looking back at The Whats predictions, once deemed outrageous and crazy, as largely accurate and for the most part, on target?

Again, you have my word I am not The What. But to suggest that America’s place in the World is in anything other than a systemic and categorical decline is either ignorant, naive or blind.

  4. I think our recent Kumbaya (sp?) at Union Hall has taken some of the sting out of comments that we’ve made in the past. For our next outing, I propose that no one knows who each of us are and we do paintball!!!

If I can’t at least get a good laugh out of snarky comments here than I’ll wind up just offering advice on the Forum posts. That would be a very sad day!!

This is a political post people, crank it up a few notches.

  5. Dave, what moreteasir is saying is s/he doesn’t have a good answer. That seems to be more indicative of the problem with this blog. But I do appreciate being referred to as provocative. And I always enjoy it when someone posts a statement asserting that they are ignoring you. It’s like a 5 year-old child.

ditto, I happen to think Bush stole the first election (via the Florida vote count). Gore actually won the popular vote and Kerry came close in 2004. My point is there were many middle classers that didn’t want Bush.

  6. DIBS – although I’m a great fan of Biff his posts towards moretea are clearly being inflammatory.

Why should I care about you type comments or you are as illogical as (acceptedly dumb) Palin are hardly neutral are they? Moretea was sticking to the facts in his posts as far as I can see.

politics does get us riled up.
