In Flatbush near Newkirk Plaza and Ditmas Park, this sizable two-bedroom rental is on the first floor of a detached home built in 1910 as a two-family. Mantels, stained glass, and wood floors are still to be found in the unit at 597 East 17th Street.

Builder Edward R. Strong was busy on the block in the early 20th century and had his own office at the corner of Newkirk and East 17th. In 1910 he filed plans for a row of two-family houses, including this one, as well as three-story flats on the block. An architect wasn’t indicated for the design of the houses, but Strong frequently collaborated with Benjamin Driesler, including on those flats. It is likely the prolific architect was behind this stretch of gambrel-roofed houses with double porches. Strong advertised detached houses on East 17th Street in 1911 as “beautifully finished” and as giving owners the potential to rent one floor at $55 per month.

This apartment occupies the full first floor with a parlor, dining room, windowed kitchen and breakfast nook, two bedrooms, and one full bath. There are high ceilings, windows on four exposures, wood floors, and neutral colors throughout.

The parlor faces the street and has a white-painted brick mantel with an interesting pointed arched opening, picture rails, and a doorway that has been closed off but still has its original trim intact.

However a renter chooses to use the dining room, it still has its typical early 20th century features including wainscoting, a plate shelf, coffered ceiling, and wood mantel. The bay window faces what appears to be a stalled construction site, per city records, but once held another house in the row that was demolished in 2020.

The updated kitchen includes a dishwasher, wood cabinets, recessed lighting, a subway tile backsplash, and tile floor. A breakfast nook, likely open to the kitchen, features a pendant light and shelving under windows.

Photos show both bedrooms have bay windows, a closet each, and parquet floors with inlaid borders. According to the listing, which doesn’t include a floor plan, both bedrooms can fit king-sized beds.

Neutral finishes in the bathroom include beige wall and floor tile, an updated vanity, and a white tub. A narrow windowed room, perhaps near the bedrooms, is outfitted with shelves and closed storage along one wall.

The listing also mentions that there is in-unit laundry. No pets are allowed in the rental.

Carlos Arze of Brooklyn Properties has the listing and the apartment is priced at $3,900 a month. What do you think?
