Development Watch: Affordable on Watkins Street
This is pretty cool. A reader sent in a photo of this affordable housing project at 550 Watkins Street in Brownsville that is being developed by CPC Resources and East Brooklyn Congregations. This is pretty cool. A reader sent in a photo of this affordable housing project at 550 Watkins Street in Brownsville that is being developed by CPC Resources and East Brooklyn Congregations. Actually, it consists of 13 four-story rental buildings. Here’s the description from the the GC’s website: “The majority of the units in the project will be made affordable to families earning 60% of the Area’s Median Income. The project will have 35 one-bedroom units, 57 two-bedroom units, and 11 three bedroom units.” Update: There’s more info on the project on this page of the HPD website. GMAP

The only difference is you don’t have kids.
yeah and not having kids when you cant afford them is the RESPONSIBLE thing to do. and i dont disdain anything, i disdain how messed up the cycle of poverty is and how people are marginalized into it and rewarded for it with various subsidies like housing/section 8, food stamps, and free healthcare. those benefits packages oftentimes are worth 50-100K a year if you do the math.. why WOULD someone choose to actually work and not make more kids? it’s a messed up system and everyone is a victim.

and yet i see people with kids in tow in every single bodega buying the EXACT same thing! (except replace dogfood with doritos).

That should tell you something. You may not want to face it, but you have a LOT in common with those “people” you so disdain. By your own description you’re lazy, under-motivated, and like to blame other people for your own problems. The only difference is you don’t have kids.

Families get housing subsidies because it’s pretty hard to take care of more than one person on a low salary.
EXACTLY, then WHY have kids?! why get rewarded with a low income apartment for that? that’s my question!

Rob, you know what you make? Okay, now subtract $200-300/week from that for childcare. Even low-income childcare is about $130/week, I think? Now another additional $100 for food. Consider also, unless you’re into cosleeping until they’re 18, an additional room or two. I’m not counting formula or diapers, because I’m sure you’ll use EC and breastfeed… but…

but they make the income limit SO insanely low for a 1 person household, that it only works out working out for people who are part of some sort of couple thing or person with a child. they know how to fudge the income limits to do that.

So what? Why should a single person be entitled to a low-income apartment over a family? And if you’re not broke enough to qualify for these places, then quit your job, go on welfare, and apply for an apartment here. Otherwise, get off your ass and search high and low for an apartment you can afford like everyone else does.

Hey *Rob* that is just a generic term for those who are not seniors or special needs. With a low enough income you are entitled to the same 1 bedroom a 2 person household could have.
decent.
yet the usual… (if you go to their website and read)
“Once complete, the building will provide housing for seniors, families and individuals with special needs”
i understand seniors… i understand special needs. (it’s a great thing that they get into this) but since when is Families some sorta special status? why does one have to be part of a family to get into one of these units? again, total blatant discrimination against singles.
