While the layout has been slightly altered, a Crown Heights floor-through retains two slate mantels and wall moldings, among other original details. It’s on the top floor of 594 Sterling Place, a modest three-story, three-unit 19th century brick tenement building with a low stoop, original double entry doors, and strappy cornice.

The railroad apartment has six rooms, a floor plan from an old listing shows. A former bedroom with a window on an air shaft has been turned into a common room with a hallway connecting it to the kitchen. Originally the apartment had a typical early layout with living room in front, dining room in the rear, and bedrooms in the middle, an old i-card from 1903 shows.

The unit, shown decorated for the holidays in the listing photos, appears to get good light and has high ceilings, original doors, and newer wood floors. The updated kitchen has a tin ceiling, dark wood cabinets, stone counters, and a dishwasher. The black and white bathroom has been updated with white subway wall tile and black and white daisy hex floor tile.
