A one-bedroom with a spacious layout has many of the features one might expect of a late 1930s building such as arched doorways as well as five closets and updated wet rooms.

It’s on the top floor of 40 Clarkson Avenue, a modern building with a “Colonial touch,” as a story in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle noted when the apartment house opened in 1938. Designed by architect Oscar I. Silverstone, the six-story, 78-unit red brick elevator building has horizontal banding at the corners, flared keystone lintels, and a rounded portico at the entrance.

An early brochure for the building and Google Maps photos shows that portico, sheathed for a time in black metal and recently restored, is made of white-painted wood with columns and swags and topped with a metal railing. Most of the flared keystone lintels are gone, although one row remains above the entrance. The door surround takes its cues from Federal and Greek Revival architecture, with Ionic pilasters and a classical entablature.

A roomy foyer with a window — a feature of the building noted by the Brooklyn Eagle — has arched doorways and an arched niche with shelves. There are original wood floors, high ceilings, and plaster walls throughout.

The living room has herringbone floors with an inlaid border, a tripartite picture window, and space for bookcases.

The updated kitchen has a dining area, dark stone counters, and white subway tile backsplash. There are also white cupboards and a dishwasher.

With two windows, the bedroom is nearly as big as the living room. The bathroom has a classic black and white theme with a modern vanity and diamond-patterned floor tile. There are five closets in the unit.

There is laundry in the building, bike room, package room, live-in super, and an architect-designed shared backyard area with seating, grill, and garden, according to the listing, from Tyson Lewis of Compass. It’s close to Prospect Park as well as Cortelyou Road and Prospect Lefferts Gardens.

Monthly maintenance is $974, and an open house is schedule for Sunday, November 12 from noon to 1 p.m. The apartment is asking $675,000. What do you think of it?
