Our masked commercial correspondent serves up his monthly dish…Apple is waiting for the right site. Ever since the company signed a lease on 34th Street and then Steve Jobs came to town and cancelled the whole deal, their real estate folks are freaked. Jobs didn’t think the location was ‘Apple’. So team is very cautious in BKLYN. Believe it or not, my bet is on Flatbush Avenue.
We love the Christmas Music on Fulton Mall. Heard Frank signing White Christmas, a movie we always watch every holiday season. Rather hear Bing do it, but Frank will suffice. Shake Shack news welcome. Time for a Burger Banger Taste Off. Jake’s, Five Guys, Checkers, Morton’s, Shake….. Marty M as judge? The Mall is part of the story now major retailers can’t find space. TJMaxx, Kohl’s, Best Buy trying…. Not many options. They should be looking Aeropostale opened the 19th and did gigantic numbers the first day.
Major office deals in the works in Brooklyn, from Fort Greene to MetroTech. The market has turned. Prices not moving up much, but ‘velocity’ is bubbling. Retail, condos, rentals, office, all moving more quickly. Williamsburg rentals out of control. Two Trees in dumbo, a key bellwether, had been doing a lease a week all summer. Now on a two a week pace lately. They’d had a 50% drop in inventory since spring. One last thing – which retailer is closing on Front Street in DUMBO? Inquiring minds want to know…..
Atlantic Avenue…
Barney’s is there. Need we say more? There’s a tremendous foot print on the corner of Smith/Jay Street and Atlantic Avenue in the building that houses the NU Hotel. The commercial space that used to be home to The Door Store on Atlantic between 3rd Avenue and Nevins Street is huge and it has multiple levels. It’s ripe for a cool renovation fitting for an Apple Store. How about the brand new condo going up on the corner of Boerum Place and Atlantic where the gas stations used to stand? That’s a very high profile location. Every car turning from Adams Street onto Atlantic would see it. There is still room at the Atlantic Center, especially since Old Navy downsized to one floor. How about the commercial spaces available on the first floors of the Forte, the Torren, Oro, etc.? There are lots of options. And they could easliy buy out a lease from one of the stores on Fulton Mall.
Oh give me a break – Apple is in the f’ing Smith Haven Mall (suffolk co – NOT the Hamptons) and the Crossgates Mall (that Albany) – the idea that they only put these supid stores in upscale location is a myth – just like the myth that Apple products are worth a 100% markup.
Cant wait till Android “Microsoft Windows” there stupid iOS. Apple was and will once again be an overpriced niche player; the Bose of computers.
One Hanson is landmarked (I think) and too small.
Agree that it will end up in Downtown Brooklyn. Some day.
Brooklyn Heights? Hah. This is Apple, not the Scooter Store.
isn’t the interior of one hanson landmarked? would be hard to make a store if that’s the case
I still contend that One Hanson Place would make either a GREAT Apple store or Equinox.
They promised us an Apple store at the Edge!
Seriously, though – if Apple is going for a mall-type store (of which they have hundreds), it could be anywhere, but probably somewhere with typical mall amenities (parking, etc.) or very high transit access. Could be a lot of places, including King’s Plaza, Atlantic Terminal (which is on Flatbush…), etc.
If they are going for another super-sized showcase store, then access is not key (viz., 14th Street) – visibility, buzz and design are (things that don’t come to mind when you look at 34th Street). It’s not clear to me how many places in Brooklyn meet this criteria, but downtown/municipal building or DUMBO are possible.
Downtown Brooklyn for sure.
Absolutely not Montague Street or Dumbo.
DUMBO has up and come, it’s going to be Downtown Brooklyn.
My guess is Dumbo. Mikey’s Hook Up just left – probably there was some mothership courtesy involved informing him first and he didn’t re-up that lease as a result.
