On the garden floor of an 1860s brownstone, this Clinton Hill rental offers wide planked floorboards, in-unit laundry and access to a shared garden. It’s located in the Clinton Hill Historic District at 129 St. James Place.

The brownstone is one of five built circa 1867 by William C. Rushmore and it retains its typical Italianate features, including the foliate brackets of the door hood and a bracketed cornice. While the stoop no longer had its original ironwork by the time of the designation report in 1981, the ornate garden level window guards were still in place.

Those windows illuminate the open plan living room and kitchen of the one-bedroom unit. There are the aforementioned wide planked floorboards, a decorative mantel and a ceiling medallion. The kitchen is tucked into a corner at the far end.

More recent design features include recessed lighting, a ceiling fan and a dishwasher in the kitchen. While not overwhelmingly spacious, the apartment appears to be in spotless condition.

Just beyond the kitchen is the bedroom, which has a closet, two windows and a glass paneled door leading out to the rear garden. That garden is shared with the other unit in the two-family house.

There isn’t a photo of the full bath but, according to the listing, it has been “newly updated.” There is also mention of extra shared storage space available in the smoke-free home. Pets are permitted but must be approved.

Listed with Marsha Yarde of Douglas Elliman, the apartment is priced at $2,400 a month. What do you think?
