This sprawling 1890s flat has been modernized with an open kitchen and updated bathrooms, and boasts three bedrooms. The Clinton, at 275 Clinton Avenue, has a prime setting on Clinton Hill’s scenic, mansion-filled avenue.

Plans for an apartment house to replace a mansion on elegant Clinton Avenue caused some consternation when it was announced in the spring of 1897. The former Fahys mansion was ultimately torn down and plans by architect Edward S. Betts were filed in July of that year.

Betts’ design for his five-story, neo-Classical building included a set back from the street and a shape like the letter “E,” with a prominent cornice and arched openings between its three wings. After its completion in 1898, the “new and modern” elevator building got an illustrated feature in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle with sketches of the exterior and a sample floor plan. Units were described as having plenty of light, mantels, tiled bathrooms, gas and electric lighting, and “tasteful design.”

This apartment has a linear layout with a long hallway connecting the living room, open plan dining room and kitchen, and the three bedrooms. There are still wood floors throughout most of the apartment and the listing mentions stained glass transoms. Most other finishes have been updated.

The living room has two exposures. An arched doorway, which opens into the dining area, creates an open flow through the spaces.

A peninsula divides the dining room and kitchen, providing plenty of counter space. The wood floor in the cooking space is painted gray, coordinating with slightly darker cabinets. The walls are covered in white subway tile and a white apron sink is positioned in front of a window.

There is a bold burst of color in the main bedroom with pink floral wallpaper and installed shelving. An en suite bath, decked out in green tile, boasts a soaking tub.

One of the other two bedrooms is slightly smaller, but has the benefit of two exposures.

The second full bath has a walk-in shower, a wood vanity, and walls covered with pink and beige tiles.

The co-op building has bike storage, a live-in super, a shared garden with barbecue, a fitness room, and a shared laundry room.

Nicholas Mouyiaris of Compass has the listing and the apartment is priced at $11,500 a month. If you want to see it in person there is an open house on March 22, by appointment only. What do you think?
