Another Head-Scratcher: 432 Clermont Avenue
Does anyone know what the story is with 432 Clermont Avenue? It’s been looking like this for as long as anyone we know can remember. GMAP P*Shark

This building is an eyesore. I’ve lived on this block for a few years and last night nearly twenty teens were loudly loitering and drinking on the stoop. For three hours! At 2am a horrible fight broke out and some kid was beating and kicking another on the stoop of the adjacent brownstone.
The loitering happens all of time. Neighborhood teens congregate there at all hours of the night but no one ever says anything to them.
This brownstone is truly an eyesore to the block.
I see. So in your ideal world there would be no social services because the old and poor choose to be old and poor (how silly of them), and therefore deserve whatever they get and can die in the gutter (as long as it isn’t yours, how unsightly). Makes perfect sense. Happy Holidays!
Actually you don’t see. The logical falacy you are making is called “false alternative”, which means their are other possabilities than those you present. Private charities were a lot more prevelant before the growth of the nanny state in the last century, as was self responsability. Yes, their are people who would fall through the crakes. The social safty net you want is unnecessary and immoral as it depends on the violation and sacrifice of some people for the benefit of other people. As for the possability of someone dying in front of my house, I would rather live with that than to dictate to others how they should live or have others dictate to me how I should live. Liberty is not perfect but it is the best of alternatives and morally there is no substitute that does not open the pandora’s box. Happy Holidays to you too!!!!!

“Just curious…How do you propose to get rid of the old people and poor people? Euthanasia? My grandmother was an old person and I was actually rather fond of her…”
Just where did I say anything about getting rid of them? They don’t however have a “right” to a free ride on anyone else’s back. If you want to support them go right ahead. Being a humanitarian means respecting everyone’s “right” to live a life personaaly chosen. It does not mean selecting, (at the point of a government gun), who will be sacrificed to whom.

“You want to know how the city could save zillions of additional dollars in Medicaid benefits?
GET RID OF OLD PEOPLE AND POOR PEOPLE.”
NO – just leave people alone. The nanny state should not exist. No one has a “right” to live on someone else’s back. If you want to help others then do so with your own resources, but don’t shove a government gun in the faces of other people to force them to comply with your value system.
happy turkey day, y’all
Happy Thanksgiving fellow bloggers!
