This weekend’s The Hunt column in The Times was about a guy who decided to ditch his $2,500-a-month, two-bedroom unit in the Financial District that he’d lived in for a dozen years because the expense was too high, and ultimately settled on an $1,850-a-month, one-bedroom apartment in Park Slope. The article says “he was surprised by the high rents” in the Slope as well as how small a lot of the apartments were. Underlying all of this is a question about how much more affordable it is to rent desirable neighborhoods in Brooklyn, like the Slope, than in Manhattan these days. Yes, most of Brooklyn is still a lot cheaper than most of Manhattan, but to what extent is this true in Brooklyn’s most in-demand areas?

  1. bxgrl, these hoods been mad pricey for a while already – not like rents were $500 then in a month it was $2500. so buyer be ware else someone chose to be oblivous to that fact that the damn rent BEEN pricy for a long time already. So my point is if someone is looking at these hoods, expect to see big rents. again to my example before, boy would I look stupid if I started bitching why the damn rent for an aptmt next to central park is so damn expensive – ie I would look like a clueless idiot.

  2. Rentals in “prime” Brooklyn really favor people with roommates and couples with no kids. Tons of chopped up “2 bedrooms” – or super expensive one bedrooms.

If you live alone, or need a family sized apartment in a good school district – you’re gonna pay.

  3. like it or not, lots of rich folks are living in or looking to move to the prime BK Hoods so not surprising, stuff is going up in price. if regular joes are to complain rents are too high, complain about it in hoods outside of these prime BK hoods. ie we dont see people bitching that rents are too damn high in tribeca, around central park, or other prime Manhattan hoods.

  4. quote:
regular JOEs need to acknowledge that prime brownstone BK hoods are now home to richie rich folks – ie if the rent feels too high, you aint making enough and should start looking in queens or further south in BK

screw that, let people with money move! people SERIOUSLY have to start making more of an effort to make those kinds of people as uncomfortable as they possible can!!
