While sometimes painful, sifting through Craigslist can turn up some interesting things, especially at the lower end of the market. For instance, this 10-unit SRO in Bedford Stuyvesant is listed at $698,000. It’s a dicey deal to be sure, and one that we probably wouldn’t touch given that at least three of the units will still have tenants. Depending on the situation and layout, however, maybe there’s a creative way to work around them. Regardless, this is a great looking building. Anyone know where it is exactly?

There was a recent article somewhere about efforts to create “humane” flophouses – which were hotels with cubicles lacking windows. SROs are one step up – rooms with some shared baths and kitchens. Much of Clinton Avenue was SROs, converted for housing for workers at the Navy yard. Interestingly the YWCA on the Third and Atlantic is in the process of created new SRO style rooms for low-income women (which is consistent with their purpose of fighting racism and sexism), thus evicting the Montessori School and the health club which have served generally more affluent people. Score one for the striving class?

Whether or not legacy tenants are a problem so depends on the tenant. My landlord inherited one who was a jerk and had to be evicted. Unfortunately in poorer neighborhoods a lot of SROs not only house addicts and drunks, but also frail and poor elderly, disabled and those with mental health problems. It’s all they can afford. So all Brownstoner was doing is pointing out the difficulties inherent in buying a house that is an SRO. Never mind the renovation costs. Addicts and drunks ( and not all of them) can cause lots of problems, but the most vulnerable people, like the elderly, I could never bring myself to evict.
That’s typical of you selfish yuppies, Brownstoners–wanting the whole world to be cleaned up and sanitized for you. What are the criminals supposed to live? I suppose you’d like to see all the criminals just ROUNDED UP and thrown into some kind of PRISONS and…
