Transportation Alternatives reports that last night Community Board 6’s full board voted unanimously “to continue the process of improvements that began with the installation of a bike lane on Prospect Park West.” What this means is that CB6 is OK’ing a plan “to build out the pedestrian refuge islands along Prospect Park West,” according to Transportation Alternatives. Streetsblog has more on the vote, which also involves “adding bike ‘rumble strips’ at crosswalks, and narrowing the buffer between the bike lane and parked cars at the northernmost end of the street. The resolution includes several other requests, asking DOT to search for ways to add on-street parking spots on PPW and side streets, and to monitor safety stats on the redesigned street for the next three years.” Meanwhile, the latest screed from the bike-lane foes was published on Park Slope Patch yesterday, and it included this line: “At some later point, CB6’s actions, and inaction, will be judged against a broader context, including the evident problems with DOT’s data.”

  1. Minard to tybur6: Just a word of advise, don’t make it seem like you hate grandma and grandpa, that makes it look like you are a pretty mean guy.

I concur. Yes, that would make you look like a pretty mean guy.

  2. tyburg, I was just teasing. I know you are very upset about the anti-bike lane proponents. Just a word of advise, don’t make it seem like you hate grandma and grandpa, that makes it look like you are a pretty mean guy. Instead, it’s about public streets and accommodating as many as possible as safely as possible, so maybe a speed bump here and there may be a good compromise. Just a thought for what its worth.

  3. Minard — I think I made it very clear… this is how I feel about Lois Carswell and her buddies. They are crusty old bags. I see many lovely senior citizens all over this town.

Of course, I guess I can’t see the ones cowering in their apartments, staring out the window with tears in their eyes, begging for a “safe” way to cross that 7-foot wide lane of death. How will they ever get to the park?! Maybe they can drive to a different entrance.

  4. It’s funny… Whenever I bike down the PPW bike lane, I always see other bikes. I would suggest that if you notice there are no bikes on the bike lane, look to your left. How many cars do you see on the roadway? Probably similarly light.

The NiBBLers and the Crusty Old Bags for Safety (they give other seniors a bad name!) are just ridiculous NIMBY folks that don’t like to see anything new. They determined that PPW (and probably Park Slope) was perfect about 15 years ago and that’s how it should remain! Unfortunately, they don’t understand that they are only a handful of the residents in the community.

  5. I have no issue crossing the bike lanes, I hardly ever anyone on the bike paths actually. In Manhattan I do see one or two now and then. It will probably pick up in the nice weather.
