Unit in Bushwick's Landmarked Doering-Bohack House With Sauna, Parking Wants $15K
A furnished “owner’s apartment” for rent in Bushwick’s landmarked Doering-Bohack house would not be out of place in a Wes Anderson movie.

With a stuffed bird and other creatures, velvet upholstered seating, dollops of ornate plaster and woodwork, and several iceboxes (one with a steam room inside), the furnished “owner’s apartment” for rent in Bushwick’s landmarked Doering-Bohack house would not be out of place in a Wes Anderson movie. There’s also off-street parking and central air, and more than a few bedrooms and baths.
Designated an individual landmark in 2014, 1090 Greene Avenue’s well-preserved original clapboard, peaked roof, porch, and two-story oriel window are highlighted by its location along the corner of Goodwin Place. Designed by prolific Eastern District architect Theobald Engelhardt and built in 1887, the standalone house’s exterior details are a blend of the Neo-Grec and Queen Anne. The brick and stone garage dates from the early years of the 20th century.
The apartment for rent includes a finished below-grade basement, most of the main floor, and parts of the two top floors. (A second unit is located in the rear, an old listing shows.) It appears to have at least two bedrooms, and potentially more, as well as a large storage room on the third floor, an office, two full baths, and three half baths, according to the listing and floor plan.
The extravagant parlor floor has two parlors, a dining room, and an expansive kitchen and butler’s pantry with two fridges. Light comes in through tall windows with fanciful toppers on all four sides of the building, and there are also mantels, a fretwork screen, bay window, and wedding-cake plaster details on the ceiling and friezes.
The dining room has a coffered ceiling, paneling, and painted scenes above the plate rail, as well as a wood and tile mantel. The blue and white kitchen has a mix of stone and wood counters, tile backsplash, and a large commercial-style orange stove with matching hood.
Upstairs in the master bedroom is another mantel, more wedding-cake plaster details, a bold mural of a jungle scene, and parquet with inlaid borders that runs through much of the house. An en suite bathroom mixes rustic and refined materials such as a reclaimed pine vanity with concrete counter, brown hex floor tile, and green subway wall tile.
A lounge in the basement level has white subway wall tile and wood bead board ceiling. Inside what appears to be a built-in ice box is a steam room lined in black and white tile. Nearby is a wood-lined sauna and a gym.
Listed by Sheri Terry of Corcoran, the apartment is priced at $15,000 a month, down from $19,000 when it was listed in late September. Worth it?
