For years, we’ve received inquiries from brokers and property owners wanting to be able to advertise individual listings on Brownstoner but we haven’t had a platform to make such a thing feasible on a widespread scale at a price that made sense. Now we do. With the help of software company Blank Slate, we are launching a new listings site called the Brownstoner Marketplace. Owners and brokers, now you can create your own sales listing for $25 per month or rental listing for $10 per month. (If you are an individual broker or firm, you can submit bulk listings by spreadsheet or company data feed as well.) The Marketplace also incorporates the Directory we launched last fall. So now you can look for an apartment and find a lawyer to do the closing, a painter to spiff the place up and mover to do all your heavy lifting in one place.

A big thanks to all the brokers who stepped up pre-launch. Some of the initial listings on the site include this huge loft at 1 Main Street listed by Karen Heyman of Sotheby’s, this one-bedroom at 101 Lafayette Avenue listed by Louis Belisario of Fillmore, and this loft at 1311 Pacific Street listed by Fouad Rahme of Triumph. We’re also really hoping that the Marketplace becomes the go-to spot for For Sale By Owner listings like this one at 60 Oxford Street.

There are already several places to list a property, but none of them are focused on Brooklyn and none of them have all the marketing features of the Brownstoner Marketplace. (For more detail on things like search optimization and analytics, check out Blank Slate’s blog.) We hope this will prove useful to buyers and sellers alike and grow into a Brooklyn institution!

Thanks,

Mr. B

  1. Mr. B, I hope this new “Marketplace” thing doesn’t bring down the quality of Bstnr. Brownstoner is cool and “with it” thanks to the vision of you and your staff. Of course these sellers and brokers will want to be in on Bstnr and profit from Bstnr’s good reputation. See comment of cmu at 12:26. Sorry, I usually like to comment positively. I wonder if you can get out of this if it proves to be a negative venture for Bstnr. It looks as if it will grow fast and exponentially like mushrooms.

  2. “Wrong again, shillstoner. You clearly missed the whole point of our Absolut rant! What we should do, and will make every effort to do, is to disclose in the post if the property is a paid listing! It’s not about eschewing sponsorship but about about being transparent.”

When was I wrong before? Not that I’m wrong now. Being transparent isn’t enough at all. You can be transparent, but at the very, very least you also need to avoid making any judgements about the property and the price. It is not at all okay to say “Love the house and at this price it should fly. (This is also a paid listing).” That will not cut it. At all.

  4. Congrats – this is a great service! Will you also be posting f/ups when sold or rented? Great way to keep comps of the neighborhood.

I disagree that this will affect/effect (still don’t know when to use which one) the integrity of the HOTD listings. Mr. B does a good job highlighting properties that fit the criteria of HOTD – that I hope will not change. However, the real stars are the comments regarding the properties. I find the community insight far more valuable than a property being recognized as HOTD.

  5. This looks nice. Too bad you will now have so much more trouble finding properties to feature as either a HOTD or open house pick. You obvioulsy won’t be able to feature any of the houses adverstised on Marketplace since that would be such a disgusting violation of any sense of ethics.

  6. Congrats to you Mr. B!
I agree this was your natural progression to bigger and better things and hopefully more lucrative not to mention a great place for owners and agents to post listings!
am excited to check it out!
