Brooklyn Open Houses -- Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill

This week’s listings include a relatively affordable Park Slope co-op, a full detached house in Gravesend, a Clinton Hill Italianate that needs some work and more. But none could compete with a newly renovated Bed Stuy home with a couple amenities you don’t see every day — at least not in Brooklyn.

Which would you choose?

10. This three-bedroom Park Slope co-op is nicely appointed, and offers a sensible layout with room for a family. Situated at 404 6th Avenue between 7th and 8th streets, it’s got some original details, including tin ceilings and the huge carved pier mirror in the living room.

9. Last week’s No. 5 drops down to second-to-last on the list. This three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bathroom apartment on the cusp of Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens feels similar to a parlor floor in a brownstone. The apartment features a layout that that allows for privacy in each of the three bedrooms. The separate living and dining room areas feature tall ceilings and original woodwork.

8. This single-family Gowanus home has a plain interior, but could be customized. When listed in June it was a relative bargain, with an ask just over $1,000,000, but was taken off the market in September, as noted in last week’s Open House Picks follow-up.

7. This Clinton Hill townhouse has an open plan and lots of exposed brick — which we don’t usually go for, but it works well here. We also like the simple style of the bath, and the fireplace in the dining area. It sold in August for $2,150,000, as noted in last week’s Open House Picks follow-up.

6. Here’s another home resurfacing thanks to our Open House Picks 6 Months Later. This well-located house in Fort Greene with lots of curb appeal is fairly plain on the inside but has some nice recent updates, including a kitchen with stone counters and subway tile. It sold in September for $3,200,000 — $200K over its ask of $2,999,000.

5. On Avenue W in Gravesend, we find a large fully detached two-family home with a private driveway. There’s a two-bedroom unit on each floor, along with a finished basement with an additional bedroom and a separate entrance. The living spaces are bright and expansive and have original parquet floors, and the plumbing and electric are new. The near-$2 million ask might seem awfully steep, but given the staggering prices those in the area’s Sephardic Jewish community have been known to spend on houses, local buyers may not blink an eye.

4. Over on Monroe Street is a renovated two-family, this one offering a triplex over a garden rental. The four-bedroom triplex has a master suite that takes up an entire floor, with a walk-in closet and a terrace. We’re not loving the finishes on this one, but it’s got a pair of decorative mantels and a fair amount of space.

3. On Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill is a semi-detached brick Italianate, 20 feet wide. This listing offers two mysteries: one is how it looks inside, given that only exterior photos are offered. The other is why it was put on the market at $1.8 million and raised within days to $2 million. The listing says it needs renovating, but has “many details still remaining from pocket doors to moldings to clawfoot tubs.”

2. In Bed Stuy we’ve got a two-family house on Halsey Street, set up with a three-bedroom upper duplex and a two-bedroom rental, with a basement rec room. At 17 feet wide it’s not huge, but it’s been nicely renovated, including updated mechanicals and roof, and has an inviting look to it. Good location as well.

1. Last week’s No. 1 holds strong! This newly renovated Bed Stuy brownstone offering something you don’t see every day — a swimming pool. And not one of those low-rent above-ground round numbers, either, but an actual in-ground heated swimming pool in the rear, laid out with stone-tile decking and a white canopy. Also in the not-your-average-bear department: The basement has been turned into a movie screening room, with an overhead projector and surround sound.
