Forget Micro-Living, It's Time to Gawk at Brooklyn's 10 Largest Homes
Studio smudio — some Brooklynites just want to live yuuuge. Check out the largest single-family abodes in our fair borough.
Some Brooklynites may be jumping on the micro-apartment and co-living trends, but there are still plenty of insanely enormous single-family homes right here in our fair borough.
Back in 2010, Brownstoner looked at the 10 largest single-family homes in Brooklyn. With new square-footage data fresh from PropertyShark, we’re bringing you a revamped and updated list.
Unsurprisingly, the majority of the borough’s largest homes are in Midwood, Gravesend and Manhattan Beach — southern Brooklyn neighborhoods with a bit more room to build up and spread out. These abodes are all well above the 1,697-square-foot average for a Brooklyn abode.
Do any of these sprawling homes tickle your craving for space? Or do you prefer the coziness of cramped quarters?
10. From the front, this home doesn’t look like a sprawling 12,350-square-foot behemoth. But the building is almost three times the square footage of its nearest neighbors, measuring 40 feet by 95 feet on an extra-wide lot.
1637 Ocean Parkway
Square feet: 12,350
Area: Midwood
9. Build in 2006, this 12,607-square-foot French-ish Gravesend manse has a huge roof terrace, central skylight, and a set of solar panels. The home had a square-footage adjustment since our 2010 list, losing more than 3,000 square feet and bumping it down from the No. 3 spot.
2126 East 4th Street
Square feet: 12,607
Area: Gravesend
8. The most thoroughly modern-looking building of the bunch, this 13,245-square-foot stucco and stone home has interesting wood window trim and an enormous green roof deck.
5322 17th Avenue
Square feet: 13,245
Area: Borough Park
7. This large Midwood home with its interesting patterned brickwork and green-tiled roof was built in 2007.
1460 East 8th Street
Square feet: 13,350
Area: Midwood
6. Just a few backyards away from No. 7 — on the other side of the same block — this normal-looking brick-and-stucco manse is about 400 square feet — a full studio apartment — larger than its neighbor.
1515 East 7th Street
Square feet: 13,735
Area: Midwood
5. Another Midwood mansion, this home also has a rather boxy facade, but with a metal mansard roof set back from the street.
3478 Bedford Avenue
Square feet: 13,760
Area: Midwood
4. Just one block south from No .9 on our list, this brick-fronted, palm-ornamented home has a simple traditional shape, but its minimalist railing and glass garage door suggest a more modern sensibility may dwell within.
2174 East 4th Street
Square feet: 14,062
Area: Gravesend
3. A new addition to our list of Brooklyn’s 10 Largest Homes, this still-unfinished, five-story Park Slope mansion is the only behemoth home outside of Southern Brooklyn. The building — with its Olympic-sized pool, five-car garage and $1 million worth of glass — was the planned dream home of property managers Joseph and Ivana Hertz. But after kicking off construction in 2005, the couple soured on the home and have been putting the unfinished structure on and off the market since 2013.
277 1st Street
Square feet:14,360
Area: Park Slope
2. This enormous Manhattan Beach home is almost literally on the beach. Just one building away from the sandy shores of the lower bay, this seemingly Georgian-inspired home also as its own pool and two roof terraces with ocean views.
281 Dover Street
Square feet: 15,463
Area: Manhattan Beach
1. At the top of the list is this 16,914-square foot home — a lovely Mediterranean villa — that somehow managed to find itself in Manhattan Beach. The home moved up from its No. 2 spot in 2010 after a square-footage update (presumably a correction of a DOB error) knocked this extraordinary landmarked 1847 Greek Revival mansion down to a mere 5,200 square feet.
90 Coleridge Street
Square feet: 16,914
Area: Manhattan Beach
