An 1890s brownstone in the Park Slope Historic District catches the eye with its original ironwork and spectacular stonework, which includes intricate Celtic-style scrollwork and puffy stacked bands of brownstone. The two-family, configured as a duplex over a garden apartment, has a mantel, fretwork and woodwork, along with modern bathrooms and kitchens. It last changed hands in 2019 for $3.1 million.

In Fort Greene, a 14-foot-wide Italianate brownstone is not in the local historic district but is in the Fort Greene National Register Historic District. Built sometime in the 1860s, it is now a two-family composed of a triplex over a garden one-bedroom. There are original marble mantels with arched openings, towering arched doorways, fancy plasterwork in the parlor and a rebuilt stair with original newel post and curving banister. A modern kitchen is set into the rear parlor, and doors lead out to a deck with steps down to a garden. A bathroom of uncertain vintage has green mosaic tile and matching green fixtures. The brownstone exterior appears in fine condition, with acanthus brackets holding up arched pediments. Its most recent sale was in 2005 for $982,500.

In Williamsburg’s petite Fillmore Place Historic District, where author Henry Miller lived as a boy, an 1850s brick house retains ear moldings, white marble mantels and wide floor boards. The 20-foot-wide four story house has been divided into three units but might work better as a one- or two-family. Permits show the house had some repair work after a fire in 2008.

In the Ditmas Park Historic District, this estate-condition bungalow built in 1916 is a “blank canvas” that will need a “total gut renovation,” according to the listing, which does not show any interior photos. In the same family since the 1960s, the standalone house has a broad, columned porch, four bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, extensive garden, driveway and two-car garage.
