Here’s a single-family Queen Anne residence next to Prospect Park that offers grand proportions, original details and an interesting pedigree. At 864 Carroll Street in the Park Slope Historic District, the house dates back to 1887, when it was designed by architect William Tubby, as part of a row of five houses whose facades were designed to look like a single Elizabethan mansion.

The interior looks to have been renovated at some point; original details include five decorative fireplaces, inlaid parquet and herringbone floors, stained glass and crown moldings.

The parlor floor is expansive, with a vast living room in front, a center staircase with a stained glass skylight at the top, a dining room, and a rear kitchen that’d be a good candidate for an upgrade.

Incidentally, according to research on the house by Brownstoner columnist Suzanne Spellen, one room was decorated with a Turkish theme by the original owner, in accordance with a turn of the century trend, and was featured in the society magazine Brooklyn Life. Said owner, Colonel Edward Earl Britton, was founder of a savings and loan and a fixture in the society pages — but came to a bad end, when he perpetrated a Bernie Madoff-style scheme to deceive his investors and landed in Sing Sing.

But we digress. The house once inhabited by the jailbird-to-be has five bedrooms, several of them massive, and an additional windowed attic room.

There are two full baths, with an additional half-bath on the parlor floor and another in the basement; none are pictured, and they may well be renovation candidates. The backyard isn’t pictured either, though there’s a nice, large wooden deck.
