Open House Picks: Four Houses With Historic Details to See This Weekend, Starting at $975K
There’s more to see this weekend if you’re house hunting, and we’ve got four picks for you, with original details and intriguing histories, in Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg and Bed Stuy.

The mercury may hit 90 today, and summer technically doesn’t end for a couple weeks still, but practically speaking, when Labor Day passes and school revs up again it’s fall. Which means sweatshirts and crisp apples are around the corner — and it means the house market is picking up after the doldrums of August. So there’s more to see this weekend if you’re house hunting, and we’ve got four picks for you, in Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg and Bed Stuy.
First stop is Carroll Gardens, where we find a four-story brownstone on Sackett Street between Court and Smith. Renovated, but with some details remaining, including a handful of marble mantels, it’s a legal three-family, set up as a single residence, with four large bedrooms on the top two floors. The garden level holds a den and a laundry room, and could easily be converted into a rental, though it also holds the mechanicals. A curious point: This one apparently sold less than a year ago for $400,000 over the current ask.
Next up, an aluminum-sided house on Lorimer Street in Williamsburg with an uncommon feature — a grape press in the basement. Left behind by the Italian family that owned this house across 60 years and three generations, it could be just the accoutrement for the bearded Brooklynite who fancies starting an artisanal wine business. The house has an apartment on each of its three floors, with finishes that could use some updating. Not a lot of detail, but there are numerous tin ceilings.
Moving over to Bed Stuy, we land on a four-story brick and brownstone house on Lafayette Avenue. A flip that was on the market last year asking $1.95 million but apparently didn’t sell, this one’s fully renovated, with modern kitchens and baths and restored original woodwork, including a pair of ornate carved mantels on the parlor floor. A four-story, the house holds an owner’s four-bedroom triplex and a garden rental; there’s also a finished basement with a low ceiling.
Last, not far off on Chauncey Street is a two-story brick house with an apartment on each floor. It’s a small house full of tight spaces; turning it into a single-family and opening up some walls could be a good way to go with this one. There’s a bit of original detail, including moldings, hardwood floors and a fireplace.
