This Brooklyn Heights townhouse combines elegant details such as a classical facade and curving staircase with modern amenities like central air and a contemporary kitchen. In the Brooklyn Heights Historic District at 176 State Street, it is one of a row of three Anglo-Italianates, known for center staircases and arched details.

The LPC landmarks map dates the row to circa 1861-1879, and it is likely toward the middle of that range. Ads show brownstone as well as “marble front” houses for sale on the block in the 1860s and early 1870s. The LPC map says the row is made of “stone” but doesn’t specify whether or not the light-colored facing on the upper floors is indeed marble. If so, it’s one of a just a few rows in the borough dressed in the material.

No. 176 still has its historic details in place, including a brownstone basement and stoop, pedimented front door surround, rounded upper-story windows, and bracketed cornice. The iron newel posts and stoop railings were replaced by the time of the circa 1940 tax photo, but the original railings have since been duplicated to match a neighbor’s.

Although slightly narrow at 19 feet wide and only two rooms deep — typical of Anglo-Italianates — this four-story house has plenty of space. The single-family is configured with a kitchen on the parlor floor and two floors of bedrooms above. The garden level can be used as a guest suite with a bedroom, full bath, and wet bar in the living room.

Period details include the original stair with its newel posts and curved rail and an etched marble mantel in the front parlor. That parlor is petite, but has high ceilings, interior window shutters, and access to the central stair hall.

At the rear of the parlor floor, the kitchen has a large central island with a sink, pale wood cabinets, and recessed lighting. There is room for dining and a glass door provides access to the rear deck.

The second floor is shown set up as a full-floor suite with a street-facing bedroom, a bathroom accessible via the hall and the bedroom, and an office set up in the rear-facing bedroom. The office space has a modern stone fireplace, one of two wood-burning fireplaces in the house.

The landscaped rear yard is reachable via both the garden level and a spiral staircase from the rear deck. A paved patio has room for dining, and built-in planters frame the few steps up to another seating area.

Other renovations to the house include updated mechanicals such as a new boiler, according to the listing. The property last sold in 2008 for $3.85 million.

Listed by Alexander Maroni and Jack Chiu of Douglas Elliman, the house is asking $6.25 million.
