Despite the large crowd that rallied last week for Mary Ward, the elderly Bed-Stuy resident facing eviction from the house she’s lived in for 44 years—and the media attention the protest drew—the owner of Ward’s house still intends to go through with the eviction. The group Organizing for Occupation says negotiations have broken down with the person who bought Ward’s house at a foreclosure auction in 2008, and another protest is planned for next Wednesday, August 31st. The recap on Ward’s situation: She signed a contract to borrow $80,000 against her house in 1995 but says she only received around $1,000 from the lender, which was later investigated for predatory lending. In recent years, the loan has bounced from one lender to another and ballooned to $200,000 before selling at auction. The protest on Wednesday will start at 4 p.m. outside of Ward’s house, at 320 Tompkins Avenue, and involve a march to 1168 Fulton Street, where the owner of Ward’s house is located.
