A reader sent in this photo of scaffolding going up earlier this week at 505 Fulton Street on the Fulton Mall. Back in 2005, The Brooklyn Paper (well, then it was called Brooklyn Papers) reported that owner Al Laboz was planning to convert the Henry Offerman-designed beauty Offerman Building to residential lofts. From what we gather, though, the exterior restoration is part of a newer plan to create new office space. And attract a higher-end retail tenant: Conways is out. The spiff-up should also coincide with the 2012 arrival next door of retailer H&M. GMAP

  1. Oldtimer;

    You are correct. This building was the home of Martins Dept. Store. I think what BrooklynisHome was trying to say was that Martins was Brooklyn’s version of B. Altman (which is true).

  2. Good to know, oldtimer. A Nordstrom’s would be great, but a good retail area needs to consider varied price points and economic needs. Fulton St. needs a Conway’s type store as well. I’d love to see both.

  3. Brookly is home ,was that Altmans ? I remember a Martins Department store that I thought was at that location. That was when there was an Abraham and Strauss not Macys.

    Not to worry about Conways Montrose they say they are moving up the street. So we can still buy $4 shirts and $7 jeans.

  4. Minard, Lauritzen designed the Union League Club in Grant Square in Crown Hts, as well as a couple of private houses on St. Marks. He also designed that beautiful house Snappy shot that was used twice this week, for Daily Links and Blogwrap up. That one is on Hancock St. in Bed Stuy.

  5. Has anyone seen the new plans for Fulton Street itself? I heard on the news the “new” Fulton Street will be complete by spring 2011. I know they are ripping it up block by block.
