At our friend’s house out on Long Island, backyard parties linger into fall with the help of their trusty firepit. Our backyard here in Brooklyn is long and narrow enough that we could put a firepit in the far end without smoking out the neighbors, but does anybody know if these things are legal around here?
The firepit pictured above is available at Hansen Wholesale.

  1. My neighbor has an annual bonfire in his backyard (way more dangerous than a firepit I might add) and no one says anything.

Provided its contained and far away from the building structure, only a jerk would call in a complaint. If you have good neighbors, fire it up.

  2. I wander if 11:29 is our idiot next door neighbor my wife called the NYFD on this summer. They started a fire against the wall of the factory behind us altough in their backyard. They were shocked that anyone would care.

  3. It’s not 50 feet it’s 10 feet for a BBQ see:
    http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/safety/barbeque.shtml

“Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet away from your house, garage, or trees.
Barbecues on residential property shall not be operated within ten (10) feet of any combustible material and there shall be available for use a garden type hose attached to a water supply or at least a sixteen (16) quart pail of water.

Never use a propane barbecue grill on a balcony, terrace or roof. It is both dangerous and illegal.

Propane barbecue grills and no more than two (2) 20-pound propane tanks are allowed on the grounds of a one or two-family home, but be sure to follow the fire safety precautions below.

Only use a charcoal barbecue grill on a balcony or terrace if there is a ten foot clearance from the building and there is an immediate source of water (garden hose or four (4) gallon pail of water). Otherwise, such barbequeings is dangerous and illegal.”

  4. 11:29 is correct, “totally illegal.” any fire, and I think this goes for grills using brickets as well (but not sure about gas), must be 50 feet from any structure. almost impossible to achieve on most lots in NYC.
