442 State Street started out on the market in Fall 2008 with a price tag of $1,200,000; by Spring 2009, when it was a House of the Day, it was down to $999,000. By late last year, the asking price was $850,000. At the time, we wrote “The place is pretty beat up and isn’t on the ritziest street in Boerum Hill, but we could see it coming to life in the right hands.” Well, it’s sold now, and it sounds like it’s fallen into the hands of someone who wants to bring it back to life. The Vera Institute of Justice just closed sold the property for $750,000 to a buyer who plans to embark upon a green renovation. We can’t wait to see how this turns out!
Update: An earlier version of this post mistakenly identified the Vera Institute as the buyer of the property; it was in fact the seller. We regret the error.
House of the Day: 442 State Street [Brownstoner] GMAP P*Shark
another F’ing house that broker tells me my bid too long, etc. and guess what, it sold for less. lying bastards.

Gloomy ole ML – the Eeyore of Brownstoner.
Pretty sure it wasn’t going to reno itself. Glad someone has taken an interest in it, and at a (somewhat) reasonable price. Best wishes to them, whatever their plans.
Minard, look at the pics from when it was HOTD. it’s a wreck.
None of this sounds good for this little house, which is most certainly historic and very attractive.
To “bring it back to life” I think they intend first to kill it.
Hm, I thought they did alternative to incarceration programs with adolescents in the NYC courts, so I wonder if they do plan to open a facility there something?
Pete,
I don’t think Vera runs any programs.
Here’s what their website says they do:
The Vera Institute of Justice combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety.
Vera is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit center for justice policy and practice, with permanent offices in New York City and Washington, DC. Our projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world.
This is a beautiful facade!
Good score for the Vera Institute!
Does this mean the Vera Institute is moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn, or would Brooklyn just be an additional location?
how the info on this ‘green’ plan? and if know that, what are they going to do with it? halfway house? offices?
