We told you yesterday about the brownstone at 196 Lefferts Place that partially collapsed on Tuesday night. Well, last night the demolition began. how sad to see such a beautiful home torn down and to know that this home was left a family member who lives on the block and watched a tree grow in the middle of the house and now this….
Now THAT brownstone looks to be half off…
Russo Wreckers are the terminators of choice of the DOB. Those guys will work all night, on Sundays, on holiday weekends. When they demo’ed 100 Clark Street in BH, the word on the street was that they gave the tenants ten minutes to leave. When I walked by I could see the tenants’ furniture and pictures hanging on the wall in the second floor apartment that had been sliced open.
Scary.
At least this building was vacant.
I never heard of the “tree house.” That’s interesting. And yes, tree roots will destroy a building. Anybody been to Angkor Wat???

do we assume that the building and the one to the left were vacant? why else wouldn’t they put a sidewalk bridge in front of the other building as they did at the building to the right. I wonder what the legal recourse for the property owner is? do they need to pay for the demo? does the city aka the tax payers pay for this work and then have to go after the owners? so many questions… still haven’t let people back into the building 2 doors down from the collapsed one, even after they did the remedial work requested.
Jeez, I don’t like think what the impact on the two adjacent buildings of this demo will be. What’s the recourse for neighbors? Who supervises this work?
Damn, wonder if they have two sets of 30×96 inch pocket doors, I need them.

for some reason i’m having trouble posting here, but here goes. This is the famous tree house. The tree actually grew inside the facade and had been for years. I just walked by and saw the actual route system, which was very impressive and obviously the ‘route’ of all these problems. I also tried to go near and look at things, and aside from those front doors the place is in horrible shape, doors, stairs railings etc.
