A tipster passed along word that a supermarket is coming into the ground-floor retail space at newish Bed Stuy development 111 Monroe, at Bedford. We didn’t hear confirmation from the broker at the development, and recent permits passed there are pretty vague. Anyone know any more info? A grocery store would be a great fit here. GMAP

  1. I know the spot too. I think it’s less than half the size of Key Food on Nostrand and Monroe, which is wider and deeper. (You can see both on Google Maps–this store is not as big as the footprint of the building, which includes a garage entrance.) Hopefully it will be better than many of the bodegas in the nabe, but I don’t think it’s really big enough for a full supermarket with produce and meat.

  2. It is a market. I live in that building. According to the person opening the market it will be “upscale”. But it will still have to be associated with a major chain (C-Town, Associated, etc). I am crossing my fingers that it will be as nice as he has promised.

  3. If a market opened up with healthy/local/fresh/gourmet items it would do very well, especially considering its location right across from the YMCA! I imagine lots of people would work out and then stop in for some quick groceries. I know I would.

  4. I know the spot. Its across the street from the Bed Stuy YMCA. Its big enough for a mid-sized grocery. There’s a Key Foods a long block over on Nostrand. Its probably about the same size. It’s not a good Key Foods though. Bad Produce.. not very clean inside.

Yeah, a new market with decent produce would be nice right there.
