Hooray, the SingleCut Beersmiths tap room is opening soon!

We got the news that the tap room at the SingleCut Beersmiths brewery is opening soon – Saturday, December 8 will be their grand opening and they’ll be there from 12-6pm that day. They are planning on having tastes available of their PNW Mahogany Ale, and hopefully their 19-33 Lagrrr, if it’s done in time. The tap room is looking great and sounds like it will be a real destination for beer lovers. The thought that has gone into the space, brewery, and kinds of beer to brew and serve is impressive. Normal tap room hours will also be in place by the time they open – Thursday and Friday, 5-8pm and Saturday, 12-6pm.

Fake art in LIC

The Queens Courier reported about a fake Jasper Johns piece that someone was trying to pass off as a legit masterpiece:

Federal agents arrested the owner of a Long Island City foundry last Thursday after he allegedly attempted to sell a fake replica of Jasper Johns’ “Flag” for $11 million.

The accused, Brian Ramnarine, pleaded not guilty. Apparently in 1990, Johns came to him, requesting that Ramnarine make a wax mold of the artwork. He did so, but never returned the original mold. So Ramnarine just created a new work from that mold and tried to convince the world that it was the real deal, but he failed. Oops. If he’s convicted, he’ll get 20 years in prison.

Black mold is bad news and it’s in the Rockaways

One of the risks now in storm and flood ravaged areas is black mold, which can be very toxic. It is important to know it’s a risk, and for homeowners to know how to handle the inspection and removal of it. Check out some steps we’ve listed toward that goal and a little bit about this crazy toxic mold.

The Solar Sandy Project has brought renewable power to the Rockaways

We were excited to read a little more about the Solar Sandy Project, which brings solar energy to relief efforts in the Rockaways. More about them:

Solar One, SolarCity, Consolidated Solar, HSBC, 11th Hour Project and NYSERDA are partnering to connect communities rebuilding from Sandy to mobile solar generators so that they can get much-needed temporary electricity. So far, we have installed five 10kw solar generators deployed in the Rockaways. We will be installing units in other parts of the city in the coming days. These units are installed in community gathering places where folks are already getting warm clothes, a bite to eat, and some basic medical services.

Right now it’s on a small scale, but who knows – it might be the spark that brings real solar energy alternatives to the Rockaways and beyond.

More scenes from the Rockaways

It’s still a hard life out there.

This video has a lot of compelling images of the wrecked Rockaway boardwalk. It’s incredible how such a large and long structure was just tossed off its foundation and onto streets and front yards.
