Summer’s still here (we think that sounds much better than “summer’s almost over”), and we hope you’re devoting your weekends to soaking up a few last outdoor adventures. If you enjoy stepping back in time while wandering around places like Governors Island – or have wanted to – then it’s time to check out Fort Totten Park, a lesser known historic gem in Queens.

The coolest part of this park is the old artillery battery. It’s open to the public, but a little bit hidden; here’s a tip so you can find it easier – first, make your way to the visitor’s center at the north end of the peninsula, then take the long underground tunnel behind it. When you come out on the other side, you’ll be in a 19th century stone structure with mysterious passageways, impressive masonry, and a cave-like feel.

You may want to return later this fall for the annual Halloween haunted house that pays tribute to the eerie landmark.

Besides trekking through history, you can take part in plenty of other outdoor activities there; the park offers canoeing and a swimming pool, and is right off of an excellent bike path.
