The Times Ledger reports on the groundbreaking for PS 313, that happened last week – this is the school that will be built to help with overcrowding of PS 199, which we told you about last December. Various Queens elected and school officials were there for the groundbreaking.

The details on the school are:

  • Location: 45-45 42nd Street, Sunnyside  (GMAP) in School District 24 (“the most overcrowded district in the entire city”)
  • Size: five-stories (two halves facing 42nd and 43rd streets)
  • Seats: 432
  • Cost: $44 million
  • Facilities: early childhood playground in the center; cafeteria; library; dining room with a kitchen; rooftop play area with a mesh enclosure; and a combination gym and auditorium room
  • Opening: September 2014 (scheduled)

The building will also be made with a brick facade to blend in with the neighborhood, with a clock tower built on each side so as to distinguish it from its neighbors. Architect Gavin Macrae-Gibson says about the new school, “It’s a full, state-of-the-art, K-through-5 facility.”
