DNAinfo reports that two Queens congressmen are backing plans to restore the Rockaway Beach rail line, using Hurricane Sandy funds, instead of supporting the Queensway, a Highline-esque park. The Rockaway Beach line closed in 1962, and has become a favorite of urban explorers.

At a press conference on Sunday in Ozone Park, representative Gregory Meeks told residents, “Restoring the rail line would speed up the pace of recovery for residents and local businesses and create hundreds of jobs while laying the foundation for a transportation network that accommodates our future growth.” Representative Hakeem Jeffries sees it as an opportunity to rebuild smarter after Sandy and noted that those living in Southern Queens and Brooklyn face the longest commute averages in the city.
