Kew Gardens became a little less green after the city chopped down the last remaining cherry trees at the Queens Borough Hall on Tuesday.

The aging trees were cut down to make way for a $17-million atrium project. Initially they were supposed to be moved and replanted, but it ultimately wasn’t cost effective, and there was no guarantee the trees would survive the process. The atrium project, however, will mean 24 new trees planted in the area, which will likely have a better chance of thriving.
