crash stories

From Transportation Alternatives:

Statistically, there are about 73,000 traffic crashes in New York City every year. Anecdotally, there are a whole lot more. Now, you can add your crash story to the map.

Why the disparity? Not every traffic crash is reported. “Near misses” never make the news. NYPD reports don’t elaborate. In fact, unless someone is killed or seriously injured, it’s outright impossible for average New Yorkers to learn where traffic crashes occur.

What you don’t know can hurt you. There are streets and avenues where New Yorkers are struck by a car, or grazed by a truck, or doored by a taxi passenger, or OMG that was too close — and everyone is ignorant to the danger. T.A. could be fighting to fix those dangerous locations, but until someone is killed or seriously injured there, there’s no way to even know the place is dangerous.

Now, a brand-new web platform from T.A. seeks to get ahead of the problem. Without the anecdotal information behind crashes, all New Yorkers are in the dark and waiting for the next tragedy. Use crashstories.org to map your crash story.

If it’s a blocked bike lane or sticky crosswalk that’s a hazard for you every day, or a crash that changed your life irrevocably, it’s time to put your story on the map. With a team of researchers at Hunter College, T.A. will fight for better traffic enforcement and a safer street blueprint where crashes most commonly occur, according to you.
