Here’s an interesting scenario – demolishing Hurricane Sandy damaged homes to create undeveloped coastline in areas that were the most severely hit during Sandy. CBS reports that this is Governor Cuomo’s proposal, which he made last Friday. One could guess that this would provide some sort of protection during future hurricanes and/or “superstorms.” Coastal properties in the Rockaways were devastated, and there has been a lot of property damage.

The price tag would be $400 million, and current property owners would hope to get pre-storm compensation. Also, it “would require federal approval since it would be paid for using a portion of the $51 billion disaster relief package approved by Congress.” The NY Times said that Federal officials were open to the idea, but we also read that a “spokesman for a storm task force created byPresident Barack Obama in December said it’s too soon to say whether New York will be allowed to proceed.”

Cuomo will let us know more in a couple of weeks.
