Last week the Sacramento Bee reported that Songza, the startup in LIC that produces a streaming music app, has over 1 million registered Canadian users, who listen to over 160 million streams. It debuted there in August 2012. It’s also clear that Canadians are using Songza on their iOS tablet devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch).

One of the thing that makes Songza unique is the “Music Concierge” service, which are “hand-crafted” by music experts – some being celebrities – so that the music stream is sympathetic to a number of factors, including time of day and and situation you’re in. It is also ad-free, and just plain free to use.

Songza’s CEO and co-founder Elias Roman said, “Songza serves the perfect expertly-curated soundtrack that makes whatever you are doing better. We saw an opportunity to bring that experience to Canada and we’re thrilled to see such positive results just seventy days later.”

Some interesting comparisons between Canadians and Americans, according to the article:

  • When browsing by Mood, Canadians and Americans both chose Mellow more than any other mood. Americans’ next most popular mood category was Happy, while Canadians’ next biggest mood category was Sexual.
  • While Americans and Canadians chose working and studying-related activities for the top two Activity choices, the third most popular choice for Canadians was Cardio Workouts, compared with Partying in the US.
