Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn is looking toward Long Island City as a NYC tech destination, according to this article on TechPresident. Quinn outlined a plan to boost the city’s tech sector by connecting Roosevelt Island, the site of the planned Cornell/Technion technology campus, Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, and Manhattan with a Select Bus Service route using wi-fi equipped buses. She proposed a “tech incubator” for LIC specifically, a space with cheap, flexible office space for local tech companies. She also wants to expand programs with the Coalition for Queens, an organization that promotes tech innovation and entrepreneurship in the borough. The Coalition already has programs in place to teach coding skills to women, minorities and immigrants. As Quinn said in a statement, “With some smart investments and planning, Long Island City will help lead the way in making New York City the next tech capital of the world.” Her tech-friendly plans earned her an endorsement from Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg. Presumably this would only be good news for LIC’s commercial landlords and restaurant owners.
