Great things are happening at Malu. They’ve added baked goods along with their ice cream offerings.

Originally, Malu started as an ice cream shop that was kid and family friendly (and they still are – the kid-sized tables and chairs are adorable), but they gained an even bigger reputation for producing some of the best ice cream in the borough. Flavors change regularly, which means the ice cream tastes ridiculously fresh and delicious.

The baked goods are made by Hans Baang, formerly of Little Oven (which has now closed). He used to be a banker, but gave that up to learn to be a professional pastry chef. It’s evident from the deliciousness and beauty of his creations that he chose well.

Right now, he is making cakes, tarts, and cupcakes, which are available throughout the shop; bigger items like whole cakes, need to be ordered ahead of time. We tired one of the cupcakes – a dark chocolate cake topped with dark chocolate ganache. It is rich and deeply chocolatey, with a texture that is neither too overly moist or dry. We loved it.

We also saw pecan tarts.

You’ll also find larger cakes, too, like this lovely streusel cake.

We look forward to seeing what else Hans Baang and Malu will come up with (and we’ll definitely be back for more chocolate cupcakes).
