Back in September we told you about the frustration experienced by locals living near 39th Street in LIC/Sunnyside – apparently drivers would regularly drive the wrong way on 39th Street. It would happen on the block just north of the Midtown Tunnel Expressway/51st Avenue and south of 50th Avenue (GMAP) when drivers wanted to get on the LIE and realized it would be a problem with loads of traffic.
The good news is that traffic calming measures are now in place – a quick curb has been installed at the corner of 39th Street and 51st Avenue. And it’s working. Locals have noticed a decrease in the number of wrong way drivers and overall the area seems safer.
The new curb was unveiled on March 1st – Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and Delila Hall, Queens Borough Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Transportation (DOT) were joined by Joe Conley, Chair of Community Board 2 and local residents for the ceremony.
Check out this video for more about these traffic calming measures.
