Ridgewood's Gottscheer Hall gets some love from Serious Eats

Serious Eats headed out to Ridgewood to enjoy a some hearty German cuisine and some beer at the tap room at Gottscheer Hall, which has been around for like forever (AKA 1924). It is “home to one of the largest Gottschee organizations in the world.” Gottschee is an area in Slovenia, which was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and more recently it was part of the former Yugoslavia.

Gottschee itself is very old – it was first mentioned in a 1363 deed.

But about Gottscheer Hall. The Serious Eats folks dined on goulash and spätzle ($11.50), krainerwurst with sauerkraut ($6), and they partook in some Spaten (found in places like the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, too). They seemed to really enjoy it. BTW, krainerwurst is a QNYC favorite sausage, just FYI. It’s DELICIOUS. The krainerwurst at Zum Sammtisch is also amazing.

They also liked the tap room – with its beautiful wooden bar, illuminated sign for the hat check, piano, and wooden paneling –  remarking that is is currently an “irony-free zone.” Ridgewood is very close to Bushwick, some some fear the influx of too many hipsters.

So head to Gottscheer Hall for some tasty German grub, sans irony. Seriously.
