On 31st Avenue, just west of 31st Street, lies Cafe Boulis, a little cafe that serves a variety of Greek pastries – bougatsa, glaktaboureko, spinach pies, honey soaked cakes, and a variety of other things. Their loukoumades – a kind of deep fried dough with origins in Greece – are ridiculously good – so light and airy and easy to eat, they really separate themselves from the loukoumades found elsewhere around Astoria.

Here, you can get them in small (5 pieces for $4) or large (12 pieces for $8) servings, or by the tray (small for 10-12 people at $15 and large for 20-24 people at $30). We sampled a small amount and they arrived fresh and warm, sprinkled with powdered sugar and honey; they were also very easy to eat. So many loukoumades are hard and difficult to eat – these pretty much melt in your mouth. Also, most places in Astoria served loukoumades as deep fried balls of dough, but Cafe Boulis makes them in a more traditional ring shape.

Aside from powdered sugar and honey, other toppings include cinnamon, chocolate syrup, sour cherry syrup, sour cherries, chopped walnuts, sesame, and agave nectar.

The coffee is also good, and is an excellent pairing with its slight, delightful bitterness to go accompany the sweet loukoumades.

A customer we encountered while there also had high praises for the croissants, especially the ones filled with Nutella. Sounds like something worth going back for.
