Remember when we wrote about Astoria old-timer Terrizzi Pastry Shop? It looked like they had closed for good but we still held a glimmer of hope that they might open again. Well, it looks like they are caput, and have been replaced by Leli’s Bakery. Intrepid food explorer Suzanne Yacka (aka tastoriaqueens) broke the news and checked them out, reporting back on her blog:

Drop into Leli’s Bakery, which opened this past Saturday, November 10th, on 30th Avenue in Astoria, and you will be astounded by how complete the vision for the new bakery is, and how much great bread, pastries and sweets are already being produced. There is good reason for this: the owners of Leli’s own a massive commercial kitchen in the Bronx that supplies the bread and pastries to some of New York’s most high end restaurants, hotels like The Plaza, the Waldorf Astoria and the Pierre, and well known desert chain stores like Crumbs.

This sounds very promising – hard to go wrong with high quality pastries, sweets, and artisanal breads. They’ll also make you a cappuccino from locally-roasted (well, Hudson Valley) beans from Irving Farms Coffee Company.

Apparently this is the first storefront for this bakery and they hope to expand further into NYC if it proves to be a success. We’ve seen another Astoria-based eatery succeed like this – Bareburger, which has locations in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. We wish Leli’s lots of good fortune in this endeavor.
