An Astoria resident is spearheading an initiative to renovate the Hell Gate Bridge, reports Queens Chronicle. Antonio Meloni, the Public Safety chairman for Community Board 1, wants better lighting for the bridge and a repainting of the metal beams. Currently the bridge, which carries freight and passenger trains from Queens and Brooklyn, only has three lights. He believes illuminating the bridge will make it look better and also make residents feel safer. He’s reached out to Con Edison to see if lighting the bridge would be possible, he also plans to present the lighting proposal to local pols, community boards and civic groups. As he told the Chronicle, “We want minimal cost and minimal effect on the environment.”

The Hell Gate Bridge actually celebrates its 100 year anniversary in 2016. You can read up on the history of the bridge right here.
